Introducing: The NEW Subaru Ascent

Subaru is ready to compete in the SUV market with its new 8-seater vehicle, the Ascent. The Japanese brand is on par with rivals like the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9, and Chevrolet Traverse. Subaru has seen an increase in sales over the past few years with its three signature models: Outback, Forester, and Impreza; however, buyers have been looking to the brand for a larger all-wheel drive SUV. The new Ascent is the biggest production vehicle Subaru has ever built and could turn out to be the brand's most popular model to date.

Boasting the brand's signature grille and c-shaped headlights, the Ascent looks like a typical Subaru, yet it's a full-size SUV. The standard model offers a 7-seat layout with two captain seats in the second row, while an optional model offers a second-row bench, making it an 8-seater. The Ascent is a revised version of Subaru's new global platform, first seen on the 2017 Impreza.

The unveiling of the Ascent at the 2017 New York International Auto Show featured a concept SUV that offered high-quality leather, touch-sensitive window & mirror switches, a large center touchscreen, and a chic electronic shift knob. It's expected to be the most luxurious Subaru in the lineup. The touch-sensitive door switches may not make it to production, but the other quality features are sure to be a big hit.

The Ascent is expected to come with standard all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission, but the exact engine options are still unknown. It seems likely that the SUV will be powered by a newly developed turbocharged, horizontally-opposed 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with direct injection. You can also expect over 280 horse power teamed up to a new, more responsive CVT.

The 2018 Ascent is projected to arrive in showrooms any day now, with sales starting before the end of 2017. Pricing should be competitive with other 3-row crossover SUVs. Expect a base price in the low $30,000s and topping out with all the bells and whistles at just under $50,000.
