Holiday Shopping & Shipping Schedule

Every year it's the same thing. You tell yourself this is going to be the year you get your shopping done early and all gifts mailed out in plenty of time to arrive by Christmas and keep your shipping costs low. Then every year, life happens and you wind up mailing out packages and paying an arm and a leg for last-minute priority shipping. Here is a handy shopping and shipping schedule to help you get your gifts out on time and spend the week of Christmas baking cookies and getting into the holiday spirit. You probably know about Black Friday, and you may even know about Cyber Monday, but check out these other important dates to jot down on your fall calendar.

November 11th is Singles Day and has been called Amazon Prime Day on steroids, so you probably get the idea. Even though you may have never heard of it, Singles Day is the biggest e-commerce day of the year. It is a Chinese holiday that celebrates being single in China. Singles Day encourages you to buy something for yourself and celebrate your independence. Initially started as an anti-Valentine's Day founded by college students in the 1990s, Singles Day, also known as "treat yourself" day, has become a huge e-commerce day for Alibaba, which had almost $18 billion in sales last year alone.

Black Friday, the oldie but goodie that's been around since way before the advent of online shopping, is always held the day after Thanksgiving, this year on November 24th. Since 1952, Black Friday has heralded the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the United States, with retailers opening before dawn to entice shoppers with all-day doorbuster sales. Make sure to check out ad circulars and store websites before heading out on Black Friday to formulate a game plan for your shopping itinerary.

The day after Black Friday is Small Business Saturday, this year falling on Saturday, November 25th. Small Business Saturday, a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, encourages holiday shoppers to stay local and do their shopping at small brick-and-mortar retailers in their area. Use this day to celebrate the spirit of enterprise by doing your shopping with small businesses that may have been overlooked on Black Friday.

This year, November 27th is Cyber Monday, a day created by marketing companies in 2005 to persuade people to shop online. Twelve years later, most Americans do at least some of their shopping online, but Cyber Monday still finds online retailers offering deep discounts and promotions to their customers. Shop this day for the biggest online deals on electronics, like smartphones, gaming systems, and computers. Make sure any purchases made online are made safely and securely and follow these tips for cybersecurity.

Green Monday, the second Monday in December, falls this year on December 11th and is the third-largest shopping day behind Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with sales up to $1.62 billion last year. This shopping holiday started in 2007 on eBay, which used this day to describe a particularly busy shopping day in December. Named for the color of the dollar bill, Green Monday is your last-ditch effort to finalize your purchases so that your gifts arrive by Christmas.

December 15th is Free Shipping Day and is a national shopping holiday as well as a year-round coupon website. Started in 2008, Free Shipping Day is a billion-dollar shopping day when more than 1,000 national retailers offer free shipping and delivery. Free Shipping Day is your last chance to make sure your gifts arrive on time.
