Under-vacationed Carolinians!

Under-vacationed Carolinians!

Did you know that in 2016 alone more than 16,635,000 vacation days went unused by North Carolinians and more than 8,827,000 by South Carolinians?  This is some serious data.  It’s time to take back your days Carolinas!

No Joking, these numbers are real and should be taken seriously.  A recent health study reveals that vacationing has direct ties to both your stress and your immune pathways and can provide improvement in your overall well-being.

"It's intuitive that taking a vacation reduces biological processes related to stress, but it was still impressive to see the large changes in gene expression from being away from the busy pace of life, in a relaxing environment, in such a short period of time.” – Elissa S. Epel, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco.

Since 2000, vacation usage has been steadily declining.  In 2016, workers reported taking almost a full week less in vacation time as compared to pre-2000 averages.  What can you do?  The most effective remedy is better planning.  Planners often take more vacations or longer vacations which lead to happier and healthier individuals the rest of the year.

National Plan for Vacation Day is celebrated January 30 to encourage Americans to plan their vacation days for the rest of the year at the start of the year.  Launched by Project: Time Off in 2017, AAA Travel is proud to partner with them to help spread the understanding that time off is essential to personal wellbeing, professional success, business performance and economic expansion.
