Uniquely Carolinian: Seagrove Pottery

Nestled in the Seagrove community of North Carolina, you will find the largest group of working potters in the United States. Open year round, there are close to 100 shops within a 20-mile radius offering a range of pottery, from functional everyday use, to sculpture, folk art, and historical forms from the past. Close enough for a one-day drive, take a self-guided tour and set your own pace, as you go from shop to shop.

Pottery-making in Seagrove started in 1781, with the abundant and diverse natural clay deposits found in the area. Native Americans were the first to discover this resource and used it for both ceremonial and functional purposes. English and German immigrant potters arrived in the Seagrove area at the later half of the 18th century and valued the local clay. By the mid 19th century, the emerging railroad system and roadways gave potters wider access to markets and helped establish Seagrove as a pottery town.

Each individual potter has his or her own sense of style that can be appreciated in their individual shops, or during special events. During the 10th Annual Celebration of Seagrove Potters, from November 17th to November 19th, various potters come together to display their goods. It's an opportunity to immerse yourself in pottery in one indoor location. Held at the Historic Luck's Cannery, the annual celebration will offer plenty of treasures for gift-giving. Festivities kick off Friday night with a Gala, Live Auction, and Potter's Market where you can shop, enjoy live entertainment, and eat. The event continues throughout the weekend with the Potter's Market, demonstrations, children's activities, food trucks, and the Sunday Beer Garden.

Holiday Open House with the Seagrove Potters is held December 1st to December 23rd. During this time, the pottery shops of Seagrove will have special events planned on the weekends, but are still open for regular business during the weekdays. Take a self-guided tour and enjoy the beautiful decorations and complimentary refreshments as you shop for everyone on your list. Studio tours, demonstrations, and live music are planned for each weekend. You can contact individual shops for more information. Admission is free and open to the public.

Experience a 200 year old tradition and discover Seagrove potters. Seagrove is open year-round so you can visit anytime.
