Weekend in the Windy City
If you've never been to the Windy City and you're thinking about a quick getaway, you'll want to book your tickets now, before the weather gets too cold! As the hub of the Midwest, Chicago is a huge, vibrant city with a picturesque skyline that sits at the doorstep of Lake Michigan. Known for its architectural beauty, world-class museums, sensational food, Midwestern friendliness, and talented sports teams, Chicago is arguably one of the best cities in the U.S.
Since skyscrapers stretch towards the heavens in Chicago, you'll want to walk around and marvel at their grand appearance. Four of the buildings are more than a thousand feet tall, while many of the shorter buildings stand out as works of art. Take the high-speed elevator up 1,300 feet to the top of the Willis Tower, where you can view the entire city. On a clear day, you will even get to see four different states.
Lake Michigan offers twenty-nine miles of shoreline adorned with spacious parks, marinas, and public beaches. Take a boat tour, stroll, or just relax along the lakefront. Admission is free for residents and guests. Extending out onto Lake Michigan is Navy Pier, a family-friendly entertainment complex. Hop on the towering Ferris wheel or ride the carousel and explore the Chicago Children's Museum.
A few blocks west of Navy Pier is The Magnificent Mile, a shopping and dining mecca that rivals 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Home to luxury retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Tiffany & Co., this portion of Michigan Avenue also boasts fine dining and luxury hotels. During the holidays, you can view some of the area's best window displays, while appreciating the other architectural highlights on Michigan Avenue.
Lincoln Park Zoo is located just two miles north of the Loop and is home to dozens of species. Spend an afternoon visiting the zoo's furry or scaly friends in their natural habitats. Get up close to the harbor seals in the Kovler Seal Pool and the gorillas in the Regenstein Center for African Apes. With no entrance fee, you can stop in for an hour or spend the whole day visiting the exhibits.
Wander among Chicago's intimate neighborhoods and seek out some of the best food in the country. Savor a slice of Chicago-style pizza at Pequod's pizza, delight in a slab of St. Louis-Style ribs at Smoque, or feast on Arroz Gordo at Fat Rice. Whatever your flavor, Chicago's restaurant scene offers something for every palate.
A trip to Chicago wouldn't be complete without catching a game at Wrigley Field, home of the world series-winning Cubs. The famous outfield walls are covered in ivy and serve as a backdrop for some of MLB's most thrilling moments. Between the enthusiasm of the fans and tasty ballpark fare, it's sure to be a memorable event. If you can't get tickets, consider going on a guided tour of the ballpark to hear more about the team.
