Now, more than ever, young single women are choosing to buy small SUVs. Among female car buyers, 40 percent aren't married, which means this demographic has a huge influence on the auto industry. By fueling the demand for small SUVs, single ladies are challenging the automotive market and shifting the demographics of vehicle sales.
Melissa Mittelman, a writer for Bloomberg, discovered some surprising numbers that revealed this trend. From 2010 to 2015, small SUV sales went up 34 percent among women buyers, compared with a 22 percent rise for men, according to the research firm MaritzCX. During that same time period, small luxury SUVs had a 177 percent increase in sales to women. So when you roll up next to an SUV at a stop light, don't be surprised to see a young woman in the driver's seat.
SUVs may be appealing to single ladies based on several factors: a larger cabin size offers more passenger comfort, the elevation provides a better view of the road, and the increased cargo space affords plenty of room to transport luggage and cargo. For these reasons, SUVs seem to meet this demongraphic's personal and professional needs. Since many SUVs on the market have high safety ratings and improved fuel economy, they naturally appeal to many buyers.
