Poor road conditions in the spring are often the result of snow, ice and below freezing temperatures during the winter. Uneven pavement or potholes can make for an uneasy ride and damage your vehicle. Potholes can advance vehicle deterioration, add to maintenance costs and increase fuel consumption. How can you avoid potholes and the damage that may result from them?

It is important to keep your tires properly inflated at all times, as they could pop if the wheel rim hits the edge of a pothole. Check your tire pressure regularly and refill with air as needed. When driving on unfamiliar roads, reduce your speed and watch out for puddles that could be deep potholes filled with water. Brake lightly and avoid swerving which could cause more damage to the tire and wheel alignment.

If you hit a pothole, assess the damage right away. If you notice your vehicle pulling to one side, your alignment might need adjustment. Steering and vehicle suspension can also be affected by potholes. Other issues like lost hubcaps, damaged tires and bent axles can also result from hitting a pothole.

Always assess traffic patterns when driving and be aware of what other drivers are doing. Keep a safe driving distance between you and the driver ahead of you so you can quickly react to unexpected problems. Stay alert and avoid this costly road hazard when possible. In most cities, you can report potholes to transportation authorities and there's even a chance you could be compensated for your damages.
