How tight of a turn is your vehicle capable of making? Chances are you’ve probably not given it much thought, unless you find yourself inching back and forth to negotiate a turn.
Your vehicle’s turning radius speaks to its maneuverability. When that maneuverability is compromised, U-turns and parking will become more challenging. Here’s a look at what affects your turning radius and potential issues that may require your attention.

  • First, your car’s wheelbase has an impact on your turning radius. A smaller wheelbase will give you a tighter radius.

  • The steering gear box affects the turning of the steering wheel and thus the front wheels of your car. Simply put, a steering gear box in a large truck will differ significantly from the one in a tiny sports car.

  • Speaking of steering, there are various types of steering setups, with power steering being the most popular today. The type of steering system a car has may affect the turning radius. Additionally, the size of the gears within the steering system may also play a role.

If you notice any of the following problems with your steering system, it can affect your turning radius as well as compromise your safety. Be sure to get the following issues checked out by your trusted technician:

  • Vibration in the steering wheel

  • Stiff steering and/or stiff steering to one side only

  • Steering fluid leaks

  • A steering wheel that is off center

  • Steering that drifts

At AAA Car Care, our team of experts is ready to diagnose and repair problems quickly, whether they relate to your turning radius or not. Visit one of our locations today.
