Before you head out on any summer road trips, take some time to find out what your tires’ wear patterns are telling you.
Upon close inspection of your tires, you may notice worn edges or bald spots that could result in problems if you don’t address them. Unfortunately, many people wait until there is a bigger problem before they get their tires checked. Be smart about checking your tires regularly, but especially before and after a long road trip.
Based on your tire wear patterns, you will possibly need to buy new tires, have your wheels balanced or aligned, or change your driving habits.
If both edges are worn, your tires may be underinflated so you should have them checked for leaks. A simple fix might just be adding air. If your tires are worn in the center, they may be overinflated and air should be let out to the specifications in your owner’s manual. If one side is worn, your wheels will need to be aligned and you should bring your vehicle in for service.
Other indicators of problems include uneven tread with bald spots, which could mean a wheel imbalance or poor alignment. Pay attention to whining or thumping noises when driving, which could indicate worn tires or poor alignment, too. If only the edges of your front tires are worn, you need to slow down. This usually indicates that you are taking curves too fast.
Pay attention to what your tires are telling you and maintain your vehicle regularly.
