The biggest mistakes people make when shopping for insurance
Pay attention to this especially when shopping insurance online. In order to “save” you money, insurance companies may default to minimum limits. If you have an accident and the damages are over your limits, you’ll have to pay out of pocket. When considering how much coverage is appropriate, speak to a local insurance agent about what coverages would best meet you and your family’s needs.
Tip: At AAA Insurance, we never recommend state minimums.
Only purchasing the legally required amount of liability for your car
Purchasing only the minimum amount of liability means that you’re likely to pay more out of pocket. Those costs may be steep.
Tip: We recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident. This protects you from paying more later.
Selecting an insurance company by price alone
It’s important to choose a company with competitive prices. But choose one that’s also financially sound and provides good customer service — such as AAA.
Tip: Check the financial health of a company with independent rating agencies. Ask friends and family for recommendations. Choose a company that will respond to your needs and handle claims fairly and efficiently.
Insuring a home for its real estate value rather than for the cost of rebuilding
When real estate prices go down, some homeowners may think they can reduce the amount of insurance on their home. However, insurance is designed to cover the cost of rebuilding, not the sale price of the home. Make sure you have enough coverage to completely rebuild your home and replace your belongings.
Tip: Raise your deductible. An increase from $500 to $1,000 could save up to 25 percent on your premium payments.
