School is back in session and child safety is in the forefront of many parents’ minds. A hot topic among school officials and legislatures recently is should school buses have seat belts, including whether or not to mandate their installation in state school buses.
School buses are a very safe form of transportation. Roughly 500 students die each year in car crashes during school travel hours. However, only four students are killed each year on school buses during the same travel hours.
As of now, California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York and Texas are the only states that have laws requiring passenger seat belts on school buses.
