Tips for Thanksgiving Cooking Safety
• Never leave food broiling in the oven or frying on the stove unattended. The same applies to grilling.
• Keep all flammable objects at least three feet from your stove. Potholders and plastic grocery store bags can easily catch fire. A fire extinguisher in the kitchen is a must.
• Always set a reminder timer when cooking on the stove or in the oven. It’s an easy thing to forget about, especially with so many things going on during the holidays.
• Be mindful of your attire when cooking. Loose clothing can be a fire hazard, especially sleeves and hanging jewelry.
• If you are using a deep fryer, it’s safest to use it outside your home. Keep the fryer away from exterior walls and wet areas.
• When using your deep fryer, always make sure your meat is completely thawed and patted dry before immersing in hot oil.
• Do not use glass casserole dishes on your stovetop. Also, be mindful of leaving glass lids on the stovetop, too. They can explode.
• Make the kitchen a “kid-free” zone while cooking or make sure they are monitored to avoid an accident.
• Always keep the handles on your stovetop items turned in. They can quickly catch on someone’s sleeve as they pass by or if the cook makes an unexpected move. Remember that pots, lids and handles also get quite hot!
With safety as a top priority this season, you can focus on the important things. In no time at all, you will be watching the big game with family and friends with a smile on your face. Just leave the dishes to someone else.

Between the tryptophan in the turkey and the overindulging in the food department, often a Thanksgiving meal can leave us sleepy.
