The Harvest Center of Charlotte started as Mission House in the 1980s in an area full of drugs and violence. Mission House began as a sign of hope for the area, distributing clothing, food and books to residents without turning anyone away. In 1993, the mission changed its name to The Harvest Center and by 1997, crime in the area had fallen by 77 percent.

By 2003, the mission had served 30,000 hot meals and were distributing groceries to 300 families every month. In 2011, more than 100,000 hot meals were served and the mission began offering counseling services. The Harvest Center is a faith-based organization sharing prayer and hope throughout the community.

The Harvest Center is partnered with Jacob’s Ladder Job Center Inc., which offers job readiness programs at the center. Its mission includes a transformation program, where selected participants are put through an intensive personal development month while in transitional housing. During this transition month, the participants work on their own development through wellness and spirituality, and they develop a personal and professional plan. Mental health services are provided, along with computer training, professional development and job search education. In the second phase, participants start working and saving money. The Harvest Center keeps a portion of their earnings during the next three to 12 months. These savings are used to pay for permanent housing once the participant graduates from the program.

AAA cares about the community. Through kindness and generosity, AAA employees raised and donated $12,000 last month to the Harvest Center. It is just one more reason to join AAA.

With its mission to empower people in need get back on their feet, The Harvest Center helps the community feel safe and protected.
