Cambridge is a university city most widely known for the world-renowned University of Cambridge, but there is even more to this city of less than 124,000.

Start your excursion with the late Gothic style King’s College Chapel, which began being built in 1446 and took over a century to complete. The gorgeous fan vault and Medieval stained glass are worth the trip. Next, head to Trinity College, the largest of Cambridge’s colleges, which boasts an extraordinary Tudor gateway and a sweeping Great Court. It also contains Wren Library, which holds 55,000 books dated before 1820 and more than 2,500 manuscripts. You’ll also want to see the Backs, the facades and stately courts behind the colleges with a series of gardens and parks lined up beside the river.

Visit the Neoclassical style Fitzwilliam Museum, one of the first public art museums in Britain, to see the treasures that the seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam bequeathed to his old university. You’ll find Roman and Egyptian pieces, artworks by the masters and more unique collections featuring banknotes, literary autographs, watches and armor.

When it’s time to eat, we recommend The River Bar Steakhouse and Grill, a 19th-century bonded warehouse located on the river at Quayside, with views of 15th-century Magdalene College. They’re known for their prime beef, fresh fish, vegetarian dishes and homemade puddings. A more casual café-style option is Aromi, serving homemade Sicilian delicacies including pizza, focaccia and flatbreads.

During the late night hours, head to Eagle, Cambridge’s most famous pub. It offers cozy rooms and food served all day in a wood-paneled 15th-century building. Another must-do is to have a glass of wine at the roof top bar at The Varsity Hotel.
