Grab a sled and make your way to southern New Mexico to get to know the nation’s 62nd national park. White Sands National Park came to be in December 2019, and the disorienting beauty of the drifting dunes of powdered gypsum sand make this desert park an otherworldly destination. With a snow sled (buy or rent one at the gift shop), you can fly down the face of the gypsum dunes, or you can put on your sunglasses and hike the brilliant white sands. Nearby, test flights are occasionally held run at the White Sands Missile Range. The historical district at the park (visitors center, museum, gift shop and other areas) will always stay open.
